Brooklyn’s ONLY Pediatric Trauma Center Is Now at Maimonides
Brooklyn, NY (August 1, 2016) – Maimonides Medical Center has been approved as a Pediatric and Adult Trauma Center by the New York State Department of Health (DOH). In fact, Maimonides is now Brooklyn’s only Pediatric Trauma Center. This certifies that Maimonides is equipped to treat life-threatening injuries that result from serious incidents like falls, car accidents and gunshot wounds, across all specialties.
“This is incredible news for our patients,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO. “The Trauma Center approval affirms our commitment to clinical excellence and providing the highest quality emergency care to the communities we serve.”
The DOH recognizes only a select few hospitals for dedication to meeting the standards of care established by the American College of Surgeons—Committee on Trauma. Maimonides has received that recognition, and has established continuous processes for monitoring and improving care.
“The American College of Surgeons set the bar high with the most rigorous standards,” noted Dr. Patrick Borgen, Chair of Surgery. “We were determined to bring the highest level of excellence to Trauma Care in Brooklyn—and with the support of our Board and Leadership, we’ve made it happen.”
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transports critically injured patients to the nearest Trauma Center, and every second counts. Research proves that rapid transport can improve outcomes after serious injury. Reducing the amount of time between the traumatic event and the patient receiving the right care is critical.
“The Trauma Center at Maimonides now increases the options available to EMS,” explained Dr. Ronald Simon, Director of Trauma Surgery. “If we can provide care more rapidly to those with the most serious injuries, then we are making a potentially life-saving difference.”
This recognition from the DOH follows a period of rigorous planning, recruitment of specialized experts, and renovations to accommodate the needs of trauma patients. Significant facility upgrades were made in the ER to accommodate the new Trauma Program.
“Parents, especially, should be thrilled by this news,” said Dr. John Marshall, Chair of Emergency Medicine. “Children are NOT miniature adults, so it is vitally important that kids get seen by the specialized experts they need when they have suffered a trauma of any kind.”
Pediatric emergency care, now including trauma care, is provided in the fully-accredited Pediatric Emergency Room at Maimonides, a division of both Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics.
“It will come as no surprise to residents that Maimonides has established the first and only Pediatric Trauma Center in the borough,” said Dr. George Foltin, Interim Chair of Pediatrics. “We are, after all, the only accredited Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn, with all of the expertise that implies.”
The ER team at Maimonides cares for over 115,000 patients each year, treating a wide range of illnesses and injuries in a state-of-the-art setting. Since Brooklyn is home to children and adults from all over the world, Maimonides is prepared for emergency conditions that may be uncommon in other parts of the United States.
Maimonides also features a dedicated Psychiatric ER, staffed by a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and social workers, with full-time coverage by security personnel. Open 24-hours-a-day via the main ER, this specialized unit was designed to provide privacy and confidentiality to psychiatric patients.
Maimonides Medical Center is nationally recognized for clinical excellence across all major specialties. Our accomplished physicians are known for innovation and strengthening our teaching and research programs. With 711 beds, the Medical Center is dedicated to bringing patients the most advanced care available—anywhere. Maimonides continues to grow in response to evolving models of care that better serve patients and families, and is an affiliate of Northwell Health.
